Education in Schools

Educating young people about the risks of extremism, particularly in a digital age, has long been a priority for many schools. The Counter Terrorism & Security (CTS) Act 2015 has now made placed a statutory duty for schools to show “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.

In Leicester Shire & Rutland (LLR) we are keen to offer our schools and academies whatever support they need to fulfil this duty. You can find a copy of the Prevent Duty Departmental Advice for Schools here.

The Department for Education (DfE) has produced a website that offers a wealth of resources for Teachers and Governors, including examples of safeguarding policies, risk assessments and materials for pupils (i.e. lesson plans). It is called Educate Against Hate and can be found here.

We have already supported the production of The Respect Programme, a series of KS3 and KS4 lesson plans for pupils that schools in LLR can register for and download for free. As the materials are updated and new content is added, schools will receive notifications of these updates so the resources will stay fresh and relevant.

We are also producing templates for risk assessments, action plans, safeguarding policies and a leaflet of advice for parents that schools can issue, along with a bespoke e-safety workshop that can be delivered to staff, pupils and parents. For more information on these, please email the Prevent Coordinator.

Whilst we have not produced any specific Primary Schools materials in LLR, we are aware of resources out there that have proven to be very effective.

A suite of free resources can be found on the Blackburn with Darwen Council Prevent for Schools website that will cater for KS1 and KS2.

Some schools in Leicestershire have already partnered with Equaliteach  who offer a combination of resources for all age groups as well as bringing a wealth of equality training, auditing and policy advice expertise and they are recognised leaders in this area.
